Just a heads up for those who still watch me - I'm going to be opening a new, more 'professional' DA account in the near future at CraftyCrab. I'm actually far more active than what my account here might suggest, and I've been doing a lot of 'physical' art as well as digital art (ie, jewelry), and I'd really like to get back into the habit of uploading things and getting feedback! However, since I've had this account for so long and there's a lot of old projects and groups associated with it that I now want to distance myself from. In fact, my rule with the new account is that I will never make any long, continued projects (like a comic series).

The options of what I would be posting includes (but is not limited to):
  • Digital fan art for various stories of various medias that I've become attached to
  • Stand-alone digital art (some completely on their own, others concerned with my own characters and ideas)
  • Short comics (the equivalent of an illustrated short story)
  • Actual short stories in written form
  • Wire jewelry projects
  • Model (toys) re-painting
  • Stone carvings
  • Sewing Projects
  • Tutorials and reference material for literally any of the above topics
Having said that, this will still be a pretty casual account. I'm a hobbyist, not a professional artist, and while I certainly may end up selling things or taking commissions, making money and building clientele isn't my primary concern. I'm just making cool shit and sharing it, basically. I will be leaving most of the stuff on this account up - I may take down some things and put them up on the other account, but most of it is just going to stay in place. There's a lot of art for other people that should stay accessible, and I'll be checking in on this account periodically.

Hope to see you guys over there!

Also, Happy New Year!

So, basically I've been neck-deep in life for a long time, and I just haven't been on DA as much as I have in the past - or even really drawing as much as I have been in the past. In better news, I am making a slow comeback to DA, now that I'm somewhat free!

In point form, things that are happening now and have relevance to you guys:
  1. I am still in school, doing my fourth year of a Vertebrate Zoology degree, so I'm still gonna be a bit in and out as far as art goes.
  2. Having said that, art cometh forth.
  3. My old dog comic, Of Tooth and Nail, has been put on hold for a while due to a current lack of inspiration, but has not been shut down completely.
  4. However, I am working on a new webcomic project, that involves traditional mythical beasts (unicorns, dragons, mongolian death worms, etc) in a modern environment - something like Men in Black or Harry Potter, but with the addition of the general public being aware of their existence. I've actually almost finished planing the general plot and have written a lot of the script for this one, and I'm really quite excited about being able to mix my overly extensive zoology education with my overly active urge to write, design, and draw.
  5. In accordance to the above point, more art cometh forth.
  6. I have a tumblr account. Feel free to stalk my ass if tumblr is your thing, since I'm more active there and I occasionally throw doodles and writings on there that I'm too lazy to stick in here. Beware of the occasional half-naked or entirely naked people that may or may not occasionally appear (drawing references, I swear).
  7. I'm getting a standard poodle puppy. The puppy may end up on here and Tumblr a lot when it's born and I finally bring it home in early March. Beware of puppies.
  8. I have missed and lost SO many messages during this hiatus, including those from a character promotion journal thingy I did a while back. Unfortunately, there's just too much stuff on here for me to sort it out, but I will be doing more in the future to make up for this injustice. I'm in the process of getting back to more recent comments and such, but if you need anything from me and I haven't responded, do leave a message and let me know!
So, in even more point form: I'm back! Look out for renovations, new art, and some general tidying of my gallery and folders.

How was everyone's Christmas and New Year's?

EDIT: Added more, so I'm making this appear in all of your inboxes so it's actually a character feature.

I stole this from :icondindellathedefender:, because I should really put something on here and I'm curious to see how many active watchers I have nowdays.

SO, how this works. If you're one of the first 20 people to comment on this journal (I probably won't get that many, but set your expectations high, children), I will look through your gallery and feature one of your characters. I'll also tell you what I like about him/her.

That's it. Clean and simple - leave a comment with the word 'herpderp' (to see if you actually read this, look how flippin' clever I am). In return, I shall click on your beautiful face and roll in your beautiful characters, select the one I like the most, and then frame it on this journal for the world (or just my other watchers) to see. Spread the love and the features!

1. :iconcamiif3tt: - :thumb369615488:
It was a pretty close race between him and the Fijord, but this guy stands out a little bit more. He has rather lovely pinto (he's a 'stang, so I think pinto is the correct term) markings, and the zebra stripes don't clutter it up too much either. Overall, a design that's eye-catching without tossing realism out the window, and has lots of detail without looking too cluttered.
2. :icondroemar: - MOTC: Guarded-by-Stone by Droemar
The contrast with the browns and greys and the bright blue eye caught my attention right away, as did all those spikes. On top of being a handsome cactus, upon reading the description, he's something of a preist and a metafiction element (brings attention to the fact that the plot is, in fact, a tale itself). Of course, this left me with the mental image of the big guy putting a great big spike through the fourth wall, and that pretty much sealed the deal for me. Congratulations Stone, you won over the flaming T-rex, the stony undead gorilla, and the disturbingly handsome canine/equine shapeshifter. The moral is Dro has a lot of life ruining interesting characters and she made me choose one because she's a big meanie pants.
3. :iconastridtjejen: - Lawrence Ref by astridtjejen
FEED ME SEYMOUR! In all seriousness, I thought Lawrence was a pretty damned cool idea - poor little setient plant, just looking for a flowerpot to sink his roots into. The leaf crest was a cool touch, and would give a lot of variety for expressions even without the eyes - plus, I have a huge weakness for reptilian figures and concepts, so that attracted me all by itself. Now I'm starting to worry about how much I want to cuddle inherently dangerous things.
4.:iconleitakree: - Umbagog: Will-o-th'-Wisp by LeitaKree
Terri is the queen of life-ruining characters, but Wisp has always held position as the most interesting and sob-worthy for me. Just in case being a six-year-old mute zombie child wasn't depressing enough, she sees everything through rose-coloured glasses. Literally - the pile of parasitic worms hijacking her brain and allowing her to eventually regain sentience creates a fantasy that she lives inside, allowing her to be happy and her body stress-free. In her mind, she's a fairy-tale princess, eating candy with the knights who love and protect her from the hideous monsters that occasionally attack and chase her - when in reality, her knights are the zombies attracted to the more advanced host, and the candy actually the fresh meat being pulled off their newest 'monster' human victim. To me, it brings up an interesting point about childhood innocence, and how children perceive the world around them at a young age, when they still believe that life is like a bedtime story - and the consequences if that is shattered. I LIKE DEEP THINGS.
5. :iconsassyhonks: -
I actually had a pretty difficult time with this one, since I'm really not into TLK-styled critters and tend to shy away from them, but I liked this little fella. She (I assume?) has a pretty flashy little design, and not overloaded in any particular area like some other designs I've seen. I like those little cub spots as well, Crazy digs realistic elements :la:
6. :icondindellathedefender: Gregor by DindellaTheDefender
Oh my god. I just really like Gregor?? The big eyes and the wee little spots are really cute, plus the slender little limbs are just. Adorable. In a way that makes me suspect I would probably cry if I saw this thing in real life, BUT I'm sure he's a sweetie pie.

Want to get in on some absolutely gorgeous, unique critters that you can get for 100:points: or audition for?

My dear friend :iconscyllarus: has had an adoptable sheet up for some time with 'Cervis'. What is a Cervi, you may ask? The simple answer is a beautiful, deer-like creature with long delicate legs, a long flowing tail, wee dainty little head, and the elegantly massive ears of a mule, that can assume a human form if it so desires. The better answer is click here and see for yourself! These beautiful little buggers are going for insanely cheap - considering Scy owns the species, design, and lineart, she's not asking for much at all. Get your asses over there and check it out! I have my own custom-made one, and I love the bugger to death and need to draw him and my various other adopted critters too.

In other news, I am finally done my exams, and I am free as a bird! I will be uploading more concept art in the next couple days, hopefully finish and upload some long overdue gift art.

There's also a possibility that I might open commissions in the near future. If I do, these will probably not be point commissions - I maaay do some sketch or other little things for points, but that would be it. All the rest would be paid by PayPal or the like, since I really have no use for points, and will finally be setting up my own PayPal account sometime soon. If I did do this, would anyone here be interested? Leave a comment and let me know!

Stay tuned for doge concepts and more info!

What dog breed do you think would be likely to survive an apocalypse?

I have a biochemistry midterm this Saturday morning (I love my life so much), which means that I'll be studying until my eyes bleed all week, and then drawing it all out on saturday night. Now, as you all know, I'm working on a comic involving a band of dogs wandering around in a post-apocalyptic setting. What do I need for this?  Supporting characters - while I have a small cast already, and a basic idea of what I want for personality types, I want to get some variety in breeds.

The Plan
Leave a comment here with a dog breed that you think would be likely still be around 5-6 years after the end of human civilization, link me to a webpage on the breed (wikipedia and dogbreedsinfo are good), and tell me why you think they'd still be around.

I will take the breeds I like and try making characters with mixes of them, and posting my sketches. I may not take all suggestions, don't be disappointed if I don't - I probably just didn't have time.

Things to consider
- DON'T DESIGN A CHARACTER FOR ME. That's my job! All I'm asking for are breeds to play with.
- My current plan is that the said apocalypse involved a worldwide primate-specific epidemic, combined with severe weather patterns. Humans are /very/ rare at this point, but the structures and scenery that they left behind are mostly intact.
- The tough and the fuzzy will probably be favored - the comic is set in southwestern Alberta, Canada, in the ruins of the Calgary area (where I'm typing to you from right now). The summer is fairly mild - the hottest it gets is +35 C, and that won't last for more than a few days. The winter, on the other hand, lasts from october/november to march/april, and the temperature is usually about -15 C to -20 C, but fluctuates anywhere from 5 C to -40 C (We've had a straight week of -40 C before). The greyhounds aren't gonna make it without little doggie jackets, I'm sorry.

Now that you're all terrified of Canada, go crazy! Toss me dog breeds, and I'll play with what I like this Saturday evening (Feb 9th). Thank ye!
